What is the History of Delfino?
Fratelli Tallia di Delfino, established in 1903 in the Biella region of Italy, is renowned for its luxury wool fabrics.
Over its 120-year history, the company has evolved from its roots in the Strona Valley – where it initially focused on sourcing the finest raw materials, particularly Merino wool – to become a global symbol of Italian craftsmanship and quality in textile manufacturing.
The company began as a small family business and expanded significantly in the 20th century. The economic boom of the 1960s saw Tallia di Delfino entering the broader clothing industry while maintaining a strong presence in the high-end tailoring market. This dual focus helped establish its reputation for excellence and innovation, attracting endorsements from various celebrities and solidifying its status as a supplier of exquisite cloth.
Limited Edition Postage Stamp and Cloth Selvidge
The mill turned 120 years old in October 2023 and was awarded a commemorative postage stamp and postcard, along with other materials marking this history of the mill, in its origin town of Strona.
The stamp itself depicts the outer facade of Delfino’s headquarters; a large, beautiful building, rendered by the artist Titania Trinca.
More about the commemorative collection
The mill also hosted a celebratory 120th birthday party and an anniversary fabric was designed. A limited edition sophisticated Glencheck selvedge in warm tones, showcasing Delfino’s expert knowledge and craftsmanship.
Richard George and Fratelli Tallia Delfino
Founder of Richard George, Richard Gunton, visited the archives of this incredible mill just before its 120th Anniversary in the summer of 2023. To be immersed in the Italian history of tailoring and see swatches of cloth designed and woven many years ago was humbling.
