The Tailor-Client Relationship

Tailoring is the complex art of designing, cutting, fitting, and finishing clothes. The term bespoke or custom tailoring describes garments made to measure for a specific client. It is imperative to have a tailor that knows a lot about the industry, fabrics and what their client requires.

A good tailor will establish an understanding of your likes and dislikes to ensure the right choices are made to suit your purpose.  They will communication with you, asking questions and listening to your responses to paint a vision of your garment.

They should also have a wealth of knowledge about fabrics, mills and the wider industry. Tailoring in Britain is steeped in history and heritage, from Kings and Queens to Savile Row.

Your tailor should be able to explain the difference between British and Italian tailoring, and showcase the finer design points that differentiate the two aesthetics.

There is immense skill in creating a garment that fits perfectly. At Richard George, we look at over 60 different points of fit and figuration on a jacket alone. (Figuration requires looking at how the client stands and moves).

Trust is key to the tailor-client relationship. Choosing all the details of a bespoke suit can be an overwhelming process, and you need somebody to guide you through each decision. Equally, the skill required to envisage a full suit from a small swatch of fabric is not one commonly used in today’s world of off-the-peg fast fashion.
