What is the process of getting a custom suit made?

Initial questions

The number one question we are asked by those new to this world is: “what is the process of getting a custom suit made?”

To shed some light on how we can help you create a beautiful piece of custom tailoring, read on…

Maybe you have a vision for your tailoring or maybe you need some guidance. Regardless of your starting point, we will need to ask you some questions. We have over 6000 fabrics from mills around the world, and so to narrow these down, we will start with getting to know you and your requirements, allowing you space for any questions you may have. The best way for us to do this initially is over the phone.

We will arrange a time to call you and ask you a few questions to help us guide you towards the best fabric for you. Some points we may ask that you may wish to consider:

  • Is this suit for a particular purpose or occasion?
  • Have you had custom tailoring made before?
  • What styles and brands do you currently enjoy wearing?
  • Do you have a preference on colour, pattern or fabric?

Design

Once we know a little more about you and this particular commission, we will meet in person at one of our showrooms where we can design and measure you for your suit. You should allow 90 minutes for this appointment and we aim to ensure that it is 90 minutes of incredible service and collaboration.

Together, we will select fabrics and finishings to design you the perfect suit.

It’s crucial that you are delighted with the finished garment, so we will give you expert advice and educate you where applicable about the history and nuances of tailoring so that you can make informed decisions…

Measuring

Not only do we take numerous measurements to create you a suit that fits you properly, we also take in to consideration the way that you stand and move, in order to make the best fitting suit that we can possibly make.

Often, we will make a toile to check your fit is perfect before we cut your suit cloth. A toile is almost like a first draft suit, made from an inexpensive cloth.

A toile can add an extra 2 weeks on to the total lead time, and we won’t make one in all cases. Your fitter is best placed to advise you on whether a toile is necessary.
